for this escapade, i decided to explore North Avenue in Quezon City..
i made a miscalculation about Eurotel North EDSA (it was double my expected rate), so i chose Hotel Sogo North EDSA as an alternative...
coz the name sounds good, but still affordable..
but actually, there's not much difference compared to the Standard Rooms at Victoria Court..
in fact, some Standard Rooms at VC are more spacious, and some offer more cozy setup (like having a couch)...
here's a comparison of the 2018 rates for Victoria Court (VC) Hillcrest's Standard Room and Hotel Sogo North EDSA's Executive Room:
Victoria Court Hillcrest
Php 645 - good for 4 hours (Php 161.25 per hour)
Php 1,290 - 12 hours
Php 1,795 - 24 hours
Hotel Sogo North EDSA (Weekday Rate)
Php 555 - standard 3 hours (Php 185 per hour)
Php 1,180 - 12 hours
Php 1,675 - 24 hours
(Note: these 2 establishments are far away from one another, and i'm just interested in the comparison of the prices)..
based on the above sample data, for the regular 3 or 4 hour stay, the rate per hour is Php 23.75 cheaper at VC..
for the 12 hour rate, Sogo is Php 110 cheaper compared to VC..
and for the 24 hour rate, Sogo is still Php 120 cheaper compared to VC..
so if you simply consider those figures, Hotel Sogo looks like a better choice...
also..
like VC, Hotel Sogo does not charge for every additional person who will occupy a room in excess of the usual 2 person capacity...
and here's a sample comparison for some of their food & miscellaneous rate:
Victoria Court Hillcrest
Php 180 - Tapa (Tapsilog Meal)
Php 50 - Iced Tea
Php 50 - per extra bottled water (500 mL)

as you can see, almost everything is cheaper at Sogo..
that's a Php 20 difference for the tea, and a Php 25 difference for the (very essential) bottled water..
the Tonkatsu at Sogo is fine, i especially like the Sweet & Spicy Dilis that comes with it (coz it brings back childhood memories), but there's just a small amount of sauce (definitely not enough for the big serving of pork)..
for the beef meals (Beef Tapa and Gyudon), i'd say that the beef at VC is way tastier..
for the Tea, i ordered a hot tea and i was surprised to get an iced tea that comes with a thermos..
initially, i thought that the iced tea must be a free drink for the Tonkatsu meal..
but upon checking the thermos, it only contained pure hot water, and not tea..
and so i was puzzled if that's really the way they serve a hot tea..?
anyway, what i did was to just mix in the cup that they provided half a cup of iced tea (minus the ice) and half a cup of hot water..
it lessened the taste of the tea, but at least it got hot...
Privacy:
in terms of privacy, i find Victoria Court Hillcrest to be more private compared to Hotel Sogo..
- like in VC, as a security measure at Sogo, the front desk will call you first and ask if you are expecting a guest.. the difference is that they'll ask you to confirm your guest's name (though they don't require an ID), which i think is not necessary.. i think it's enough that your visitor knows your room number and that you'll confirm that you are indeed expecting someone.. the name is not important, because the staff doesn't know what your visitor looks like, and that's already the job for the peephole to let you confirm if you have let the right person in...
- bills payment are done on the spot at Sogo.. every time you order something or upgrade your accommodation, they'll ask you to pay your bills upon delivery.. it's not comfortable, because you can't do your stuff (take a shower or things like that) if you are expecting something to be delivered to your room.. for me, waiting is a waste of time and money.. unlike at VC, where you can do whatever you want, just let the staff leave whatever you ordered at the anteroom, and just pay everything upon check-out...
it's my first time to use a key card..
like some hotels in Boracay, i think it's a switch for the room's power, though there's also a main switch inside the room itself...
the peephole is slightly cracked..
but it has a wall cabinet..
and it's a plus for Sogo that they provide some hangers...
i'll give Sogo a plus for the metal chair with cushion..
it's sturdy and allows you to do more fun activities...
i'm not a fan of that kind of bedside mirror...
for the TV..
Sogo also has its adult channels; Western at Channel 114 and Asian at Channel 108..
the TV reception is also good...
the toilet bowl is basic, and the sink is a pedestal type..
the shower knob can already be pulled out of place..
but the hot water function is working fine..
also, there's a bathroom exhaust fan for this room...
for the electronic safe..
it was locked when i checked in, so it was of no use to me..
i don't know if it's the last occupant's fault or that of the hotel staff, or if it is really no longer functional...
but here are some things which i didn't find at Hotel Sogo North EDSA:
- no complimentary breakfast for a 24-hour accommodation (they always serve a meal for 2 at VC)
- no complimentary bottled water (there's usually 2 for other hotels)
- no free rubber
- no free toothbrush(es) and toothpaste
- no free shampoo and liquid body soap (though they provide a bar soap)

Performance Evaluation:
i had 13 days of abstinence before my 14th and 15th Adventure..
